ex-pupils of Godalming Grammar School who got together a team
playing under the name of Godalming United FC. In 1971 United
joined forces with ex-Surrey Senior League side Farncombe FC and
took over the facilities at Wey Court. The Club assumed the name
of Godalming & Farncombe United and they continued to play
in the Surrey Intermediate League(Western Division). The Club
had extensive work to do on the new pitch, which was built on
an old waste tip, replacing the previous senior ground which is
now the site of Wey Court Sheltered Residence.
The Club gained some success int he Intermediate League, the first team winning the Premier Division Challenge Cup in 1972, while the reserves were runners-up in the First Division B League. In 1978 the Club applied for, and were granted, senior status and they were accepted into the Combined Counties Football League for the start if the 1979/80 season. A year later the name was changed to Godalming Town FC. Over the years club members have put a great deal of hard work into improving the facilties at Wey Court including, in 1991, building a stand, the shell of which came from Addlestone FC and putting post and rail around the ground. At the close of the 1991/92 season, the Guildford Football Appeal granted a sum of money to the club towards the erection of floodlights. In return, the name of Guildford was incorporated into the new name of Godalming & Guildford FC. 1995 saw the erection of a turnstile and the introduction of a PA System while 1996 saw the refurbishment of the Clubhouse. Further plans to improve the facilities, upgrade the dugouts and carry out other works to bring the ground up to Ryman League standard are now being worked on, in conjuction with securing a new long term lease from Waverley Borough Council. Since joining the Combined Counties League, the Club have won the League Championship in 1984, having won the Challenge Trophy in 1983. In 1997 they were runners-up in the Challenge Cup. In the 1997/98 season the Club entered the Southern Combination Challenge Cup for the first time and won it at the first attempt, winning 3-0 against Ryman First Division side Hampton on their ground. The Reserves won the league in 1996 and 1997, and have been runners-up in 1988, 1995, 1998, and 2001. they won the Challenge Cup in 1992 and again in the 1998 season and have been runners-up in 1986, 1987, 1993 and 1996. They also won the Challenge Shield in 1997, having also been runners-up in 1992. For the coming season the Reserves have entered the Suburban League which will see them meeting mainly Ryman and Beazer League Teams. This should provide stronger opposition but should narrow the gap for players progressing to the first team, giving the club more strength in depth. Last season the Club had an excellent FA Cup run, beating Littlehampton 6-0, Whitchurch 3-0, Chatham 3-2 but losing 0-1 to Hampton & Richmond in the 2nd Qualifying Round. In the FA Vase beating Three Bridges 1-0, but losing to Cray Wanderers 1-2. Surrey Senior Cup not so lucky losing to local rivals Ash United 3-4 in the 2nd Round. Current manager Roger Steer is starting his fourth full season in charge, having taken over in March 2000. Mick Wollen returns as Assistant and Dave Ward has joined as Coach. The Reserves will be managed by new man Clive Jacobs. Youth Team run by John Mepham and Jan Eaton remains as Club Physio.
